### Philo of Alexandria: Every Good Man is Free

#### by former Junior Fellow Maren Niehoff

This book by former Junior Fellow [Maren Niehoff](https://marenniehoff.huji.ac.il) (1989 - 92) is volume 9 in a series providing commentary on the works of Philo, a Hellenistic Jewish philosopher born roughly 20 CE. The series aims to make Philo’s thought accessible to readers such as graduate students who are just beginning to read him, but also contains much material that will be of interest to specialists in Hellenistic Judaism, ancient philosophy and patristic literature. This volume focuses on Philo’s treatise on freedom and situates the text in the circumstances in which it was written, namely in the aftermath of the Alexandrian pogrom in 38 CE, when he served as the head of the Jewish embassy in Rome.
