Manne (2011 - 13) is currently a professor of philosophy at Cornell University, McNamer (1995 - 97, 1998 - 99) is a professor of English and medieval studies at Georgetown University, and Mestyan (2013 - 16) is a professor of history and Middle Eastern studies at Harvard.

Established in 1925 by founder Senator Simon Guggenheim, the fellowship is awarded based on both prior career achievement and exceptional promise. Each fellow receives a monetary stipend to pursue independent work at the highest level under “the freest possible conditions.”
